What Is Dungeons & Dragons Therapy? How Does It Help Teens and Young Adults in Northern VA?

Dungeons & Dragons therapy is a form of experiential group therapy that uses collaborative storytelling and role-playing to support emotional growth, social skill development, and self-awareness. For teens and young adults, it offers a structured yet creative space to practice communication, problem-solving, and resilience, especially for those who may struggle in traditional talk therapy settings. Through character development and shared adventure, participants safely explore real-life challenges in a supportive environment.

Here’s how it helps:

  • Builds frustration tolerance: Players learn to navigate setbacks, unexpected outcomes, and in-game consequences without shutting down or giving up.
  • Strengthens teamwork and peer interaction: Success in D&D requires collaboration, listening, turn-taking, and working toward shared goals.
  • Improves emotional regulation: Managing character choices, conflict, and competition helps participants practice staying grounded and respectful.
  • Encourages perspective-taking and empathy: Role-playing different characters expands understanding of others’ thoughts, feelings, and motivations.
  • Develops confidence and problem-solving skills: Facing in-game obstacles reinforces creative thinking and persistence in a low-risk setting.
  • Creates a safe social space: Structured tabletop expectations support healthy communication and positive group dynamics.

Traditional & Non-Traditional Approaches

How We Use Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) Therapy for Teens & Young Adults

At Cabush, Paul & Associates, our therapists use DnD to connect to clients in a less traditional setting.

For many teens and young adults, Dungeons & Dragons therapy feels less like therapy and more like a collaborative adventure. It combines imagination, strategy, and social interaction in a structured setting where participants can build confidence, practice real-world skills, and explore challenges safely through storytelling and role-play.

Dungeons & Dragons therapy can help with managing:

  • Anxiety: The structured turn-taking and predictable game framework create safety, while navigating in-game uncertainty builds coping skills and confidence.
  • Loneliness/Isolation: Shared storytelling and teamwork foster meaningful peer connection and a sense of belonging in a supportive environment.
  • ADHD: The interactive, hands-on nature of gameplay engages focus, channels energy productively, and reinforces patience and persistence.
  • Academic & Performance Stress: Problem-solving challenges and character setbacks help reframe “failure” as part of growth—building resilience and adaptability.
  • Depression: Collaborative achievement, creativity, and social engagement increase motivation and connection while fostering a sense of mastery.
  • Social/Emotional Skills: Encourages communication, frustration tolerance, perspective-taking, emotional regulation, and cooperative problem-solving.

"Not only did I get the chance to demonstrate how I would use an axe against an ogre, it gave me the opportunity to really work on things I can use, and let me examine how I work with people. The game's so engaging and fun that you don't even realize you're in therapy."
